How we clean rugs
Rugs are made differently from fitted carpets, and the pile is often longer, so it holds more grit and dirt. The technician checks the rug first and chooses the method and solution for it.
1
Check the rug. Fibre, construction, colours and any stains. We test the colours in a small hidden area first, so the dyes won’t bleed during cleaning.
2
Remove loose dirt. Grit is removed before any water is used.
3
Pre-treat stains. Marks and heavily used areas are treated with a suitable solution.
4
Hot water extraction. The rug is cleaned and the water is extracted with the dirt, so it is left damp rather than wet.
5
Final check. You’ll be told how long to keep off it.
Which rug types can you clean?
We clean most modern synthetic and wool rugs. Rugs made of natural plant fibres such as sisal, seagrass or jute can be damaged by hot water, so they need a different approach. Persian, oriental, antique, silk and other handmade rugs need specialist care. Send us a photo before booking so we can tell you whether our rug cleaning service is right for it.
How long does a rug take to dry?
Usually 3 to 6 hours. Keep the room ventilated and don’t put furniture back on the rug until it is fully dry.
Can every stain be removed?
Hot water extraction with pre-treatment removes most everyday dirt and many stains, but some stains can’t be guaranteed to come out, depending on what caused them and how long they have been there.
Rugs, carpets and upholstery in one visit
Rug cleaning is often booked together with carpet cleaning and sofa and upholstery cleaning, and all three can be added to an end of tenancy clean.
What affects the price of rug cleaning
- Size. Our prices are set by rug size: small, medium and large.
- Material and construction. Wool, synthetic and natural fibres need different treatment.
- Letting agents and property managers who need a consistent standard across properties
- Homeowners who want a deep clean or a clean after building work
How to prepare for rug cleaning
- Clear furniture and items off the rug if you can, or tell us if heavy furniture stands on it.
- Tell us about stains and what caused them, if you know.
- Keep pets off the rug until it is dry.
Rugs, dust and allergens
A rug’s pile traps dust, pet hair and allergens such as dust mite debris, which a vacuum only partly removes. Hot water extraction washes them out of the fibres.
Caring for your rug after cleaning
- Ventilate the room: open a window or run the heating to speed up drying.
- Don't sit on the furniture until it is fully dry.
- Vacuum the upholstery regularly with a soft brush attachment, and deal with spills straight away by blotting, not rubbing
- Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth. Don't rub, as rubbing spreads the stain and damages the fibres.
Wool, synthetic and natural fibre rugs
- Wool rugs are hard-wearing and clean well, but need the right solution and temperature so the fibres and colours aren't damaged.
- Synthetic rugs (polypropylene, polyester, nylon) are usually the easiest to clean.
- Natural plant fibres such as sisal, seagrass and jute react badly to water, can shrink or discolour, and need a different approach.
Frequently asked questions
From £89 for a room in a flatshare and from £210 for an unfurnished 1-bed flat with one bathroom. The final price depends on the size and condition of the property and whether it is furnished. Send us a few photos and we’ll give you an accurate quote.
Yes, and some tenants do. The areas that most often cause problems are the oven, limescale in the bathroom, the inside of cupboards and appliances, and skirting boards. If you are short of time or the property needs more than a regular clean, that is where a professional clean helps. Can I do end of tenancy cleaning myself?
